Reading and writing practices in college students: building a data collection instrument

Abstract

How to design an instrument that allows collecting data on the reading and writing practices and habits of undergraduate students at the University of Guadalajara? The aim of this article is to show our design of a data collection instrument, through an analytical/conceptual approach and the review and analysis of questionnaires from related studies such as those of the OECD, INEGI, CONACULTA and Ibby México, in which we found variables and data that could cover some areas not contemplated in said questionnaires.
Subsequently, we decided on the variables to be used for the classification of the data obtained: “access to
reading”, “reading and writing practices”, and “reading and writing habits”, which in turn were delimited in
dimensions, categories and subcategories for the design of the questionnaire items. Finally, we present the
questionnaire items designed based on our research. The data collected with this instrument will support
the design of a digital ethnography study that delves into the habits and strategies of undergraduate students,
in order to detect their needs from a pedagogical and sociocultural point of view, as well as enhance
their literacy practices and habits and devise strategies to attend to them in and out of the classroom.
